Sara Spurlark Art #rayschool #CPS #hydepark #chicago

Very cool Graffiti art featuring Sara Spurlark that was unveiled at the most recent Hyde Park CAC meeting.  I know that Ray School has been going through some challenges of late, but hopefully they’ll find a great place for this art.  It’s important that our elementary schools keep connected to their history.

I wrote about Ms. Spurlark at the time of her passing.

Sammy’s, at the corner of 57th & Cottage Grove, is no more. Just a matter of time before it is demolished. Always shocking how many doctors you’d see there indulging in a unhealthy lunch!

Seminary Co-Op – New Location

In Books, Chicago, University of Chicago on November 25, 2012 at 9:00 am

Here are some pictures of the new location of the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore – now right next door to the Robie House – on Woodlawn Avenue.  I have to admit that I was a skeptic about this whole move, but the space looks really wonderful, and the promise of a cafe right between the bookstore and the Robie House is magnificent.

Powell’s Midnight Madness Sale (September 2012)

My favorite consumer event is the annual Powell’s on 57th Street Midnight Madness Sale, where every item (under $50) is half-off between 9pm and Midnight (if you own or buy a Powell’s T-shirt or tote bag).  I sat out last year’s sale, mostly because I felt like I was running out of space for books, but I’ve moved since then, and space is the least of my concerns.  The key is to get to the store early, maybe 8pm, while you can still move around freely.  Alternately, showing up around 11-11:30 is ok, even if not quite as easy as earlier.

Here’s the follow up to my picture from last week (of the Med on 57th) supporting their striking teachers.  Those shows of support are incredibly well-recieved, and kudos to the teachers at Ray for reciprocating.

Book Review: The Obamas by Jodi Kantor

The Obamas
The Obamas by Jodi Kantor
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Much more armchair psychiatry (conjecture about the psyches of the Obamas) than one would have guessed, but the juxtaposition of the internal lives of the administration with the external happenings in the world *was* fascinating.

Note:  Mayor Emanuel doesn’t get the best of treatment…
